Environmental Club

Following up on a fascinating summer workshop on Sustainability and Environmental Education in Arizona this past summer, Mr. Gerard Wykes and Mr. Peter Suchmann have initiated a new Environmental Club at North Shore Hebrew Academy High School. A large group of students have jumped in with energy and enthusiasm. Ella Shakin quickly became the Club President and helps to run the club and all of its activities. So far the club has done a beach cleanup, a clothing drive and Skyped with a climate scientist in Morocco. (Scroll down for more on these fantastic events!) There are many more ideas in the works. Students interested in joining the club should look for our posters around the school and listen for announcements about upcoming events. The club hopes to tackle some sizable issues this year involving a ban on bottled waters, a butterfly garden, a recycling program and lots more. Creative input and energy are welcome at all meetings.  It is my hope that from our activities, many of our students will get involved in related science research and related science and environmental competitions.

Climate Science Skype Conference

On Thursday, Nov 17, 2016 ,  Mr. Peter Suchmann presented an interactive Q and A via Skype with Sonja Klinsky (klinsky@asu.edu ) an Assisstant Professor from Arizona State University and formerly a researcher in the Cambridge Centre for Climate Change Mitigation Research at the University of Cambridge. Ms. Klinsky was in Morocco for the first session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 1) which were held in Bab Ighli, Marrakech, Morocco from 7-18 November 2016.

The Conference successfully demonstrated to the world that the implementation of the Paris Agreement is underway and the constructive spirit of multilateral cooperation on climate change continues. The conference involved 198 countries meeting to deal effectively with Global Climate Change challenges facing us all. The students and Mr. Suchmann found the update very interesting and very informative.

H&M and NSHAHS Thanksgiving Clothing Drive

Each year tons and tons of clothing and textiles end up in our landfills. As much as 95% could be repurposed and reused. Mr. Gerard Wykes and Mr. Peter Suchmann, working with students in our Environmental Club, ran a clothing drive for the H&M Garment Collecting Initiative. Over the course of 2 weeks, 5 large bags of clothing were collected and delivered to the H&M store in Roosevelt Field. In addition to repurposing the fabrics and the clothes, H&M worldwide is donating 3 cents for every 2.2 pounds of clothing or material. Our thanks to everyone who helped in this great initiative.

Splish S.P.L.A.S.H. Clean the Trash

NSHA students worked with Award winning GN Environmental group - Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. to clean up our barrier beaches.

On beautiful sunny Sunday November 13th, a group of NSHA HS students worked with Award winning GN Environmental group - Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. to clean up our barrier beaches. This fantastic seafaring voyage was organized by North Shore science research instructor, Mr. Peter Suchmann. They not only cleaned up the beach but also gathered many interesting samples for their various research projects. Take a look at the great photos from their day!
